Working in collaboration with Trigger Global the team embarked on an ambitious concept to build an AR and binaural audio tour of each of the major spaces on the ship. Guests download a bespoke app prior to embarkation which alerts them to content as they move around the ship. In each space the user is prompted to hold up their smartphone camera and experience human holograms who serve as AR tour guides via live action volumetric capture. In lifelike AR view the architects, designers and CEO of Royal Caribbean describe the extraordinary inspiration behind this cutting edge ship.

“Bringing guests closer to the world than ever before is such a driving-force behind Celebrity Edge – with our innovative outward-facing design, unique new experiences, and world-opening itineraries – and now we’re excited to bring guests even closer to the ship herself,” added Lutoff-Perlo. “And now, the Celebrity Edge Access Tour app will offer guests a behind-the-scenes look at what makes Celebrity Edge truly exceptional, all in breathtaking 12-megapixel clarity.”

SOUND DESIGNER’S SCOOP
“This project was quite unusual – we had to create a binaural audio experience for spaces that had not even been built yet! Furthermore the ship was essentially a floating construction site with 2000 workers and some very loud tools on board. We had to work in an extremely agile way and employ a range of techniques to compose the intricate soundscapes that really bring the AR tour alive”.
